The idea that our industry is young is wrong in pretty much every way. Video games did not get born in a vacuum, but distribution channels, monetisation models and game genres and mechanics had all been developed earlier and video games was just a logical next step in a line of 5500 years of games. It did open possibilities for new types of games the same way paper opened new doors 500 years earlier. In the talk I will walk through the history of games and show the magnitude our industry has shaped the world throughout millenia. From impacting women’s education in Renaissance Italy to being persecuted and games being burned at the stake in late medieval times. From shaping the two world wars to paving a way for video games and their rise and fall and revival in 1980s – the talk will cover key elements to build understanding that our industry is older both as creative art and as a business than motion pictures or even literature.
